Time to Review Your Finances?
Is September the ideal time to review your finances? January gets all the glory when it comes to fresh starts. But if you’ve ever tried to overhaul your life on 2nd January with a hangover and an empty fridge, you’ll know it rarely sticks.
September is different.
The kids are back at school. The routine returns. The evenings start drawing in and suddenly you’ve got headspace again. It’s the real new year for most of us, and it’s the perfect time to review your finances.
Why September is the best time to review your finances
There’s a reason September feels like a reset. After the slower pace of summer, we naturally shift into planning mode. We think about the months ahead. We make lists. We get organised.
That energy is worth harnessing, especially when it comes to money.
A financial review can feel like one of those things you’ll “get around to eventually.” But eventually has a habit of turning into never. September gives you a window. You’ve got four clear months before the chaos of Christmas, and six months before the end of the tax year in April.
That’s plenty of time to make meaningful changes without rushing.
What to include in your financial review
You don’t need to overhaul everything in one go. But autumn is a good moment to ask yourself a few honest questions.
Your pension
When did you last check what you’re paying in? Is your employer matching your contributions? Could you afford to add a bit more before the tax year ends?
A pension review is one of the most valuable things you can do. If you’ve changed jobs a few times, do you actually know where all your pensions are? You’d be surprised how many people have old workplace pensions sitting forgotten somewhere.
Your protection
Life changes. The cover you set up five years ago might not fit your situation now. If you’ve had children, moved house, changed jobs or taken on new financial commitments, it’s worth checking your life insurance, income protection and critical illness cover still make sense.
Your investments
Are your investments still aligned with your goals? Are you taking the right level of risk for where you are in life? And are you making the most of your ISA allowance before it resets in April?
Your estate
This one often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. But with Inheritance Tax receipts hitting record levels and pension rules changing from April 2027, it’s becoming more important than ever to understand where you stand.
If you haven’t reviewed your will recently, or you’re not sure how the upcoming changes might affect your family, now is the time to look at it.
How often should you review your finances?
Most financial advisers recommend reviewing your finances at least once a year. But the truth is, the best time to review your finances is whenever something significant changes in your life.
That might be a new job, a house move, a baby, an inheritance or simply a shift in what matters to you.
September works well as an annual checkpoint. It gives you enough time before the end of the tax year to make adjustments, without the pressure of a looming deadline.

Why start your financial review now, not later
We speak to a lot of people in February and March who wish they’d started the conversation sooner. By that point, the tax year end is looming and everything feels rushed.
Starting your financial review in September means you’ve got time to think. Time to gather paperwork. Time to have a proper conversation about what you want and what’s possible.
Good financial planning isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about making decisions that work for your life, and that takes a bit of breathing room.
